The Society History
Bidborough Dramatic Society was launched in 1972 with a production of Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit.” As with all our subsequent productions, it took place in Bidborough Village Hall. Current membership is around 100 men and women and is made up mostly by Bidborough residents but we are delighted to also have members from the surrounding areas.
We have done Pantomimes in the past but our repertoire has mostly been drama (comedy is our favourite of our audiences), using a selection of famous and less well-known playwrights, (including a debut drama piece) and musicals. Our last two musical productions were entitled “Best of Broadway” in 2016 and “Showtime” in 2018 which was a compilation of popular numbers from many shows and included some short comedy sketches plus a very moving tribute to the anniversary of the end of WWI. That show also had some youngsters taking part – many for the very first time – who literally stole the entire show!”
Our usual routine is two performances per year – in April and November. We traditionally rehearse on two weekday evenings for approximately 12 weeks in most cases and these rehearsals take place in the smaller of the two spaces in the Village Hall. We also like to arrange a few social events during the year as well: – play readings, soirees, quizzes, and parties for example.
We will shortly be coming up to our Centenary production. However, as you will understand, the Coronovirus pandemic caused postponement of the April 2020 production and may even push plans for the November musical “Scrooge” forward. Like everyone else, we will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, we will be always be delighted to welcome new members who want to join a lively and happy band of people who – given the chance – have a great deal of fun. We don’t just want actors either. The behind the scenes roles are even more important than actors! Without members filling those roles, there would be no productions at all!
So do come and join us! You will be more than welcome.
